My parents came to Coober Pedy in the early seventies. Dad was a miner and a mechanic, Mum kept the books. We lived underground in a dugout.
They were digging out my bedroom when they hit blue green crystal opal in the wall. It was worth $1,500, which went a long way back then. There is a photo of me in the highchair, showered with the money.
I was working in a local opal shop at 12, noodling the fields after school. From my late teens I mined with Dad. It started with a york hoist and buckets, then came the explosives licence, the blower, the jack pick. These days I am still on my own ground outside Coober Pedy, with a camera running.
